Roots on the Rails

THE 2008 COWBOY TRAIN
Vancouver to Winnipeg
October 27 - 31, 2008
with Ian Tyson, Tom Russell and Eliza Gilkyson

Cowtrain Poster by Charlie Hunter Picture this: you awake to soaring, snow covered Rocky Mountains and a cold, rushing river outside your train window. Climbing out of your warm bed, you head to the dining car for a freshly cooked breakfast, hot coffee and lively conversation as the train twists ever-higher toward the Continental Divide. Today, a feast of unbelievable scenery and amazing music awaits - music from true legends of song. There'll be song-swaps, open mics and concerts filled with laughter and stories as our train traces the contours of the land. And you are a part of it all - you're one of the lucky ones aboard the storied Cowboy Train.

Ian Tyson and Tom Russell had so much fun on the 2007 Cowboy Train across Canada that they're doing it again, this time from Vancouver to Winnipeg, this time joined by their good friend Eliza Gilkyson.

Our own private section of the great 1950's streamliner The Canadian... Our own Skyline dome lounge car, performance car, dining car and sleepers. Rolling from tidewater in Vancouver along the Fraser River to the headwaters of the Thompson, past towering Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, to the small village of Jasper, nestled in the heart of the mountains, then across the vast prairies from Edmonton to the historic trading city of Winnipeg at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

Sleeper accommodations and delicious, freshly-prepared meals are provided on board, as well as a pre-trip show and a night at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver - one of the grandest of the great railway hotels. On board, there's plenty of room for socializing and song-swapping; plenty of glass-topped dome seating for taking in the scenery... and, most importantly, plenty of great music, friendship and a community you will never forget. Naturalist Elsabe Kloppers will explain the passing flora, fauna and topography. When we reach Winnipeg, a farewell concert and final hotel night await. It doesn't matter if you're traveling with friends or going solo, if you play music, write songs or just love listening: join Ian, Tom, Eliza, the Roots on the Rails crew and an amazing cast of characters for an unforgettable trip on one of the great railway journeys in the world.

All Aboard!

"The music was incredible, the scenery magnificent, the service on the train was excellent, the hotels wonderful, and the social mixing with other travelers were great. And the Roots on the Rails crew were so professional and organized! It made it easy for us to relax, sit back, and enjoy every glorious moment."
- Russ and Tracy Bodnar, previous trip participants

THE PERFORMERS:

Wylie

IAN TYSON

www.iantyson.com

Ian Tyson has long been one of Canada's most respected singer-songwriters. A pioneer who began his career in the early days of the first folk boom in the '60s, he was one of the first Canadians to break into the American popular music market (with Ian & Sylvia). In the years that followed he hosted his own TV show, recorded some of the best "folk" albums ever made, quit the music business and became - after years of backbreaking work - a rodeo rider and a successful rancher. With songs covered by Neil Young, Judy Collins, Suzy Bogguss, Gordon Lightfoot, Bobby Bare and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among many others, he returned to music with a vengeance in the mid-'80s, scoring platinum albums in the process. He has found himself able to combine his two separate lives in new songs that explained the reality of "western culture" and the mindset of a cowboy in a sometimes-alien world.

Tom Russell

TOM RUSSELL

www.tomrussell.com

"Russell's work is among the most moving and literary of the past thirty years, an antidote to the recent trajectory of self-absorption in American singer-songwriting . . . his story-songs are unlike any others." - Andrew Marcus, East Bay Express. Tom Russell was born in Los Angeles and now makes his home on the border in El Paso, Texas. He has recorded eighteen albums of original material and has written such classics as "Navajo Rug," "Gallo del Cielo," "Blue Wing," "Walking on the Moon," "St. Olav's Gate," and "Outbound Plane." Russell's songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Guy Clark, Doug Sahm, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Ian Tyson, Suzy Bogguss, Iris DeMent, Peter Case, k.d. lang, Bob Neuwirth, Sylvia Tyson, Katy Moffatt and many others. Russell's acclaimed tribute to Merle Haggard, "Tulare Dust," co-produced with Dave Alvin, was responsible for creating what came to be known as the "Americana" radio format. Rolling Stone stated: "Russell is one of America's greatest songwriters...as close to a Homeric treatment of American history as we're ever likely to see."

Eliza Gilkyson

ELIZA GILKYSON

www.elizagilkyson.com

Eliza Gilkyson has led a remarkable career. The daughter of successful songwriter Terry Gilkyson, Eliza is a third generation musician. She's been recording since the '70's, but fully hit her stride as a performer and songwriter starting in 2000, with four critically acclaimed studio albums and one superb live album since then. Her songs artfully reveal the roots of her progressive patriotism, comment on the direction our world is headed and peel back the thin layers obscuring the heart of what matters in these complex times. Eliza has played at most of the top folk festivals in North America, appeared several times on NPR's All Things Considered and has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, alongside such luminaries as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt and Nancy Griffith. This will be her second Roots on the Rails trip.
