Ocean Nova

Panorama

Nova Cabin

We will go where large cruise ships cannot - from the open ocean into hidden bays and remote villages. Our vessel, the Ocean Nova, was built to navigate ice-choked seas. The ship is ours entirely: she carries just 92 passengers and sports only outside cabins with private facilities, a beautiful panorama lounge, a spacious dining room with excellent meals and a comfortable library. She is a perfect expedition ship for five nights and six days of music, laughter and discovery.

Departing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, we’ll travel by night and go ashore by day to Cape Breton, the remote inlets and rocky coastline of the South Shore of Newfoundland and the islands of Miquelon and St. Pierre, the last remnants of France’s once-immense possessions on this continent. Where there are no docks, inflatable zodiacs will take us ashore, or to witness marine life and birds up close. Experienced guides from Adventure Canada will lead nature discussions, hikes and strolls. We end our journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the most easterly point in North America.

There will be open mics, picking parties, and after dinner each night, full concerts from the extraordinary Fred Eaglesmith, his band and friends.

This is adventure music travel in the great tradition of last year’s Polar Bear Train! Berth space as well as private doubles and triples are available - it doesn’t matter if you’re travelling alone or with friends and loved ones - once you take one of our trips, you’re part of the tribe!

"A unique combination of luxury travel and musical performances. A rare chance to spend time with my favourite performers for an extended period and close-up. It changed the way I listen to their songs forever!" - Mirjam Kapoen

"I can't thank you enough for the wonderful job. It's such a treat to be part of an adventure like this where everything is taken care of for you and you get to experience the most amazing things in addition to the trains! I'm already looking forward to next year!" - Trisha Pedroia

THE SCHEDULE

Halifax Cape Breton Lighthouse

Ocean Sunset

Francois

St. Johns

Monday, 9/13: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Nature has blessed this area with sandy beaches, rugged shorelines and colorful gardens. This fine location was the site of the first British town in Canada, founded in 1749. Since then, the area has evolved to be home for a diverse mix of people. Charming fishing villages, farming communities and Atlantic Canada's largest city awaits you. Passengers board our vessel in the afternoon, settle in, enjoy a welcome dinner and set sail.

Tuesday, 9/14: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
The seat of an ancient culture and hub of the Celtic folk music revival, for centuries, the Scottish and French settlers of tree-covered mountains and magnificent valleys nurtured their heritage in relative isolation. The splendour of the Cabot Trail and the bold highlands, where moose and bald eagles abound and humpback whales caper in the shimmering waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, offers visitors a spectacular whale watching opportunity.

Wednesday, 9/15: South Shore, Newfoundland
The last of the true "outport" communities are found here amid dramatic and imposing rocky cliffs and wild ocean. Though fewer in number now than at the peak of the fishery, the friendly residents are no less hospitable. One of the least travelled and most difficult areas of the island to reach, the South Coast is not easily accessible by road and best experienced by the sea.

Depending on the interests of our group, we can arrange to be treated to music and a dance at an authentic Newfoundland "Kitchen Party," or a visit to Miawpukek (Conne River) will reveal a First Nation's settlement that has the mandate of fostering an economically self-sufficient community guided by traditional values.

Thursday, 9/16:
Either a trip to the Magdalen Islands or an additional day on the remote South Shore.

Friday, 9/17: Saint-Pierre, France
An integral part of the French Republic, the islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon are the last remnant of France's once large possessions on this continent. An eclectic collection of homes or diverse color and style aligned along picturesque cobblestone streets and alleys.

Saturday, 9/18: St. John's, Newfoundland
Discover one of the oldest cities in North America, a city unlike any other. Cradled in a harbour carved from 500 million year old rock and surrounded by hills running down to the ocean, St. John's is the most easterly point in North America. St. John's has been vitally important for centuries to explorers, adventurers, merchants, soldiers, pirates, and all manner of seafarers, who provided the foundation for this thriving modern day city. It is a lively metropolis with a vibrant art community and is home to many galleries, theatres and museums. The colorful streets and attractive waterfront, brimming with cafes, restaurants and boutiques, do not disappoint.

Passengers disembark the vessel after breakfast. A tour of the city and surrounding areas may be arranged. Many travellers opt to stay an additional day or two to fully explore what the city has to offer. There will likely be a Fred Eaglesmith Band show (seperate ticket) in St. John’s that night.
